          Brief Introduction of SFL, Ludong University

              The School of Foreign Languages of Ludong University was founded as the English Faculty in 1963, renamed English Department in 1971, Department of Foreign Languages in 1994 and attained the present name in March 2002.

              The school presently has a teaching staff of 116 members, including 10 professors and 20 assistant professors, 18 of whom have Doctoral Degrees; an enrollment of 2363 full-time undergraduate students and 159 full-time postgraduate students.

              The school offers BA programs in English, Japanese, Korean and French. The discipline of English Language and Literature was ratified as provincial characteristic key discipline of the 12th Five-Year Plan. The school’s “Applied Foreign Language Talents Training Base” has been appointed as a Humanistic Science Research Base of Shandong Province. The school has the authority to confer masters degrees in the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, which comprises of 3 second-level academic degrees of English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, and foreign linguistics and applied linguistics; 2 professional degrees: MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) and Subject Teaching of English. The English major of this school has been honoured as provincial brand major of Shandong, and the school also boasts the only Provincial Exemplary Digital Experiment Teaching center of Shandong.

              The school has made remarkable teaching achievements with its strong teaching staff reasonably structured, characterized with a dense academic atmosphere and advanced teaching ideas. In the last 5 years, the school has won such teaching prizes as 1 of national second-level, 1 of provincial first-level, 2 of provincial second-level, and 2 of provincial third-level. The course of “English Newspapers Reading” has been rated as a provincial-level excellent course. Students’ passing rates of this school in TEM 4 and 8 are both higher than those of their peers nationwide by over 30%. Over 100 awards have been won by the students of this school in contests both at home and abroad, including 1 champion, 1 second-place and 19 first prizes. The postgraduates of this school have published 86 academic articles. The employment rate of graduates is over 85% and that of the postgraduates is 100%, who are all highly appraised by their employers.

              The School takes theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, British and American modern literature, translation studies, Eastern Asia language and culture, and French language and culture as the main areas of teaching and research. It has also set up such research institutions as the research centers for Second Language Acquisition and FL Teaching, Computational Linguistics, British and American Literature, Translation, and Comparative Study of Chinese and Japanese Cultures.

              The school has achieved noticeable advantages and results in such areas as comparative study of English-Chinese languages based on generative linguistics, English language testing, automatic essay scoring, second language acquisition and teaching based on PETS corpus study, literary stylistics, comparison studies of Chinese, Japanese and Korean traditional cultural customs, and translation studies based on systematic sciences. In the past 5 years, the school faculty has been hosting 2 research projects supported by the National Social Science Fund, 2 projects supported by China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, 3 projects of humanistic and social science of China’s Ministry of Education, 1 special project of national educational science programming, and 13 projects of Shandong provincial social science programming. Twelve articles of the faculty have been published on such major international journals as Journal of Pragmatics, and 48 published on CSSCI periodicals, in addition to 21 academic books. The aforementioned publications have won 1 second and 1 third prizes of provincial Social Science Excellence Award and 9 prizes of Shandong High School Excellence Award.
